Vastu Tips for Kitchen Placement Every Homeowner in West Bengal Should Know
I get this request in almost every second project. “Please design my kitchen as per Vastu.” Families across Kharagpur, Midnapore, and Digha take this seriously, and I respect that. Let me walk you through the Vastu principles I actually apply when designing a kitchen.
Why Kitchen Placement Matters in Vastu
The kitchen represents fire energy in Vastu Shastra. I always explain this to my clients first. Fire needs the right direction to bring balance, health, and prosperity into a home. Wrong placement disturbs that balance.
1. The Ideal Direction for Your Kitchen
This is the first question every client asks me.
- ✓ South-East is the most recommended direction for kitchens
- ✓ North-West works as a good secondary option
- ✗ Avoid North-East completely, it disturbs the water-fire balance
- ✗ Avoid placing the kitchen at the centre of the home
South-East belongs to Agni, the fire deity. I design kitchens here whenever the layout allows it.
2. Stove and Cooking Range Placement
The stove is the most important element in kitchen Vastu. I position this carefully in every project.
- ✓ Place the stove in the South-East corner of the kitchen
- ✓ Cook facing East, this direction brings positive energy
- ✗ Never place the stove directly opposite the main kitchen door
- ✗ Avoid placing the stove under a window or exposed beam
3. Sink and Water Source Placement
Fire and water need distance in Vastu. I never place these two elements close together.
- ✓ Position the sink in the North-East corner of the kitchen
- ✓ Keep a clear gap between the stove and the sink
- ✗ Avoid placing the sink and stove in one straight line
- ✗ Avoid placing the sink directly opposite the stove
4. Storage and Cabinet Placement
Vastu also guides where I place heavy storage units and appliances.
- ✓ Heavy cabinets and storage go in the South or South-West wall
- ✓ Keep the North-East corner light and clutter-free
- ✗ Don’t overload the North-East with heavy modular units
- ✗ Avoid storing grains directly above the stove
5. Colours That Work Best for Kitchen Vastu
Colour choice matters as much as layout. I recommend these shades based on Vastu guidance.
- ✓ Yellow, orange, and red tones activate fire energy positively
- ✓ Light wood tones bring warmth and balance
- ✗ Avoid black or dark blue as the dominant kitchen colour
- ✗ Avoid overly cold, all-white colour schemes in the cooking zone
6. Lighting and Ventilation
Vastu places strong emphasis on natural light and airflow in the kitchen.
- ✓ Keep the East or South-East wall open for natural light
- ✓ Install proper ventilation near the stove for fire energy to flow
- ✗ Avoid a dark, closed-off kitchen with no natural light source
Common Vastu Mistakes I See in West Bengal Homes
- ✗ Kitchen placed directly below or above the pooja room
- ✗ Main door of the kitchen facing the main entrance of the home
- ✗ Toilet located right above or adjacent to the kitchen
- ✗ Overhead beams running directly above the cooking stove
My Final Advice
Vastu doesn’t have to compromise your kitchen’s functionality. I always find a way to balance both. Good modular planning respects Vastu principles while keeping the layout practical for daily cooking.
